03 f150 5.4 compared to 09-10 f150 5.4

Looking for real opinions from people who have owned or driven both. Currently I have an 03 f150 supercrew 4wd 5.4. We recently bought a 15' Nash camping trailer that weighs about 3,000# empty, maybe 3,500-3,800 loaded. On our first trip we did about 1,000 miles in Northern Ca and Oregon. The truck did OK but in the mountains where it is usually twisty and the speeds are 30-50 mph, the gap between second and third is too much and is annoying. Looking at an 09 or newer f150 with the 6r80 trans. the gear spacing is much closer.

6R80- 4.17 - 2.33 - 1.52 - 1.14 - .86 - .69
4R75- 2.84 - 1.55 - 1.00 - .70

The other Trucks I've been looking at are an 05-10 f250 v10 with the 5r110 trans. or an 02-10 f250 5.4 or v10 with the 6 speed manual trans. but those are hard to find. Might even look at Chevy/Gmc with the 6.0, I had a 2000 2wd 1500 silverado with a 5.3 and it was a very reliable truck. Probably not interested in a diesel unless I found a smoking deal on a 7.3 or Dodge 5.9 with a manual trans. but that is unlikely. I had a very clean low mile 02 f350 7.3 with the auto but didn't like the 7.3 with the 4r100.
Right now I'm only putting about 5,000 miles a year, no commuting just normal running around, hauling a dirtbike and pulling the camp trailer 5-8 times a year.

The 3.v 5.4 should have a little more spunk. I don't think there is much of a mpg penalty going to the V10 though if you go that route...

I would avoid an 05 or newer 5.4. The cam phaser issue is a deal breaker for me. Stick with the V10, 7.3, Chevy 6.0 or if you can find one 8.1. I saw one recently on Craigslist with a 6spd...super super rare.

Yes, avoid the 3v 5.4. Doing a timing set complete with cam phasers at 100k miles sucks. The 2v 5.4 and 2v or 3v 6.8 without phasers are far more reliable.

I found a truck, an 04 f250 supercab, shortbed, V10, 6 speed manual, xlt . Finding a clean truck with a manual trans. is hard. I took a chance and drove over 500 miles to get this one.
