RPM @ 65 & 70 in direct

My memory was tired... I checked this afternoon.

Pinion Seal leak

I've had a very slight pinion seal leak (wasn't even sure it was a leak for months), just enough getting on the lower leading edge of the rear diff to collect dust. Then, in the past week a couple drops on the garage floor.

Had my gearing shop R&R the rear seal for $118.00. Hopefully this is not a recurring problem.

I had the same problem after I got my 456 done. the shop replaced the pinion seal again and all was good.

No leaks since.

I found these diffs are really sensitive to over filling too. I refilled my diffs when I got the truck back and overfilled the back diff a little bit, the pinion seal leaked until it was at the right level. My bad, but now that its at the right level, no leaking.

I'm usually very careful about overfilling, but I'm glad you posted this caution. I will go check the level right now as the shop topped-off the level after the job and I should insure it's not over full. I think overfilling diffs is very common, particularly when shops use bulk gear oil and pump it in fast and under pressure.

Do you just fill yours level full to where it seeps out?

I actually now just fill then till it about to the top but not seeping out. when I filled it the first time I did it until it seeped out, but then the pinion seal leaked. after it stopped leaking I checked it again and it was just shy of the bottom of the fill plug.

I looked in the Toyota shop manual I have just now and it actually says 0-5 mm below the bottom of the fill plug. Mine are about 5mm +/- below the fill plug.

I know the spec for Dana axles used to be (still is?) slightly below level full. I think this was/is regularly ignored with most people filling them until they leak out the fill hole (or more).

Thanks for checking your shop manual. The diffs are cool now so I'm going to check the rear and see where it is.

Redline, I've enjoyed discussion on 4:88's very much. I've bounced back and forth about purchasing a F350 w a pop top or building up my 2000 tundra 4.7 l with a more compact pop top. Decided to go the Tundra route. It's bone stock. Am looking at enhancing its backroad capability. Thinking a little taller tire, some body armor and a gear change are in order. I live in Battle Mtn, NV and have a condo in Reno. I'm looking for some one to install 4:88's and other suspension parts. ( I've read Overland Journal Article on 4Runner mods and think it's what I'm looking for on my Tundra.)

I would appreciate your comments. As an aside I have very much enjoyed reading your journal entries in "Roadtraveler". I drove a school bus load of kids over BobScott Summit in January of 1982 at 2 am and experienced the same slipping and sliding in that very spot hand. All ended well without any mishaps. Thanks for your remarks and blogs. I very much enjoy the commentary. Warmest Regards, AZ51
