So, anyone know anything about the new GC? Whats its factory code and is it any good? Im attracted to it for the diesel powertrain and its size. Might make a good overland vehicle? Thoughts?

Is the question about the new 2010 model or the current WK ?

The MB 3.0l diesel was only in the 2007 and 2008 models to my knowledge.
I have not seen press about the 2010 having a diesel yet, but I would be very happy for someone to tell me that they have a new offering.

BTW I love my Diesel WK

Im looking at 07/08 model year. With the sell off of Daimler, I doubt the 10s will have the Merc diesel. Besides, I couldnt afford a new one these days anyway. Hows your been over the miles? How is it offroad?

From what we understand there will be no diesel offering for 2010. For those of us who have the 3.0L, it's a phenomenal engine and as for off-highway handling, does quite nicely.

I wrote a review of the GC awhile back with the 3.0L. You can check it out here:

But back to the subject. Looks like there will not be a diesel offering for 2010 and with the new design for 2011, looks like the diesel option in general is mostly caput. :(

Wow, the clearance is that low? I really want something with a diesel from the factory because I have decided, after much internal debate, that the extra headaches involved in swapping in a diesel are things I dont want to deal with and I certainly dont want to have a shop do it for me as the cost would be insane. The liberty is just too small for me (6'4") and the WK is pretty much the last available option. Of course there are diesel Cruisers I can import but theyre just too big for what I want. A WK/ Discovery sized vehicle is what Im looking for.

So, how does the 4wd system in these things work? Is it a NP242 case or something completely new? I see that there are a few lift options out there to clear taller tires and help improve the offroad angles

Have you sat in a WK? You might be disappointed. I found it very low inside and I'm only ~6' tall with long legs. Before getting too excited about the WK go test drive one.

What's your budget? You see diesel swapped Land Cruisers in the for sale sections here and at ih8mud occasionally for reasonable coin given what they are.

Yeah, I know that there are some privately swapped diesel powered Cuisers over on Mud. Im interested in something with a diesel in it from the factory. Not to take anything away for the people that did the swaps for sale, but something the factory put in you know is going to be done correctly.

Agree. I'm always leary of any engine swapped vehicle for this reason. All I'd suggest is that if you look at a swapped truck then look for one that was done by one of the "pro" shops that specializes in it or a home brew that the owner has had for a number of years and/or miles since doing the swap.

I just picked up an 09 WK. I'm also 6'4". I agree the WK is a tight fit, but I have found "my position" which suits me just fine.

I have a little over 1" between the top of my head and the roof, and this is with the sunroof option. Although I end up sitting higher than I would like, the rearview mirror can be worked up to see clearly ahead.

I would like to see if I could get the rear seat bottom to tilt down a little farther while leaving the seat front all the way up for support. I have heard the seat base can be modified for height, but have not seen any particulars on such a mod. I have also thought about checking out the SRT8 seats. If they offer a greater range of adjustment, I'd keep an eye out for some seats from a wreck.

My WK still has a stock suspension, so I do have to duck down a bit ti get in. I may end up with a 3.5" lift just to make getting in/out a little easier. A 2" BB might be enough, but I think I'd rather get a complete lift.

There is plenty of leg room for me, and someone who rides behind me, so long as they are not as big as me. :) Another words the kids fit back there just fine, with as much room as they had sitting behind me in the Ram 2500.

I find it a little tight for the left arm, as the ergonomics appear to be for someone sitting a bit closer to the wheel, but I manage. Regarding the left arm, the only thing that really bugs me is the door lock post. There is no room for my left arm to fit between the post and the door window frame. I have thought about cutting it down and installing a pull cord, but wondered about the poor safety implications of the mod.

Overall, I like the WK and I'm looking forward to working on it in the years ahead. Now I just need to find a trailer to take the place of the 4x6 pickup bed I sold. :)

...

BTW... This is my 1st post and I have been enjoying the read thru of many sections on the site.

Just to add my 2 cents

I went to purchase the GC when the new body style came out. At 6'4, figured it was a good "fit", no pun intended. Well, needless to say, I about knocked myself out getting in the drivers side door due to the sloping of the door frame toward the front window. Couldnt do that every morning and ended up with the Commander, a GC with a little bigger body and have had no complaints about it since purchase, once you add some heavier suspension bits and related accessories to make it like it should have shipped. Might we worth taking a look at one of those if around. Mine has the 4.7, which works well, but would also recommend test driving one with hemi just to make sure you cant live wo that.
