Thanks for all the feedback. I have actually found something that is a little more reasonable. Ok, the colors are ridiculous, but the weight and size seem right. Basically, it just needs to have a shower and toilet. My wife is fine with the RTT and peeing in the bushes for about a week...

Haha, good point. If I did it, I might upgrade my rear axle to a Gen 2 SR (with the big discs), and then ensure that the trailer has electric brakes. How will it handle pulling the trailer at 55-60 (and slower) for 10-15K miles?

My Montero has the following specs: Gen 1 LWB 3.0L 5spd EMU Suspension What do you guys think of pulling a 14ft camper trailer with a 350lb tongue/hitch weight and total weight just shy of 3000lbs? Is that just too big of a trailer? Here is a pic of it:

Don't be so sure that you can automatically bring one back. I was at Aviano 10 years ago and I tried to bring back a UAZ Patrol and it was a no-go. In fact, they were refusing to bring back US Spec cars that were brought over by the service member in some cases.

Very nice. At $5K, the price is not horrible. You could probably sink another $10K in it and have a very capable vehicle.

First, thanks. Second, I always saw the hood as wasted space. I was planning on reinforcing the hood, etc, but I see where you are going with the safety issue. I may put it on the rear bumper instead because when I get my ARB, I will be mounting lights to the top holes.

While that is true, there is a lot of free camping to be had in the US by virtue of safety, and traveling solely in NA mitigates the costs of shipping a vehicle and/or crossing borders. Hotels rooms are more expensive in the US however.

My post was partly in jest. I have driven a 94 and 96SR, and prefer my 89 (not to say the others weren't more comfortable, etc).

Why all the Gen I bashing? Sure the Gen 2 and 2.5 are nice and more modern, more horsepower, etc, but the Gen 1 is so simple. It just hearkens back to a simpler time before cars were wrapped in plastic.

I really like these. They won't work for the Subaru though, as the rack is too narrow to get them lined up properly, and the railing is about 2.5" wide. I might order some for my Montero, as they will make life easier there, as I won't to be able to slide it along the bars if also loading the...

Great point, and that is what I do when taking if on/off of the Montero, but it doesn't help me at all when putting it on my wife's Outback without gutter mounts and with factory rack.

These might work, and look heavy duty. Do you know what the distance is between the bolts? I will have to look at the rails on my tent too, to make sure I have the rails running the correct way.
