    1993 2450

Fell in love with this at Terry Lee Enterprises in La Junta. Extremely well cared for. It Lived in California. Bed rails were powder coated, interior sound proofed and rhino lined. In dash A/C, automatic, fast axles capable of 80+ mph. Three passenger interior looks new, as does the engine...

Researching motorcycle lift/carrier for an OEV.

I have seen some not so good things with motorcycle racks on the back of a couple of expedition vehicles. I assume most are not designed for bad road/off road use. That said, Rob Pickering in LaJunta has built/modified them for the back of some GXV's, but I don't know how they hold up either.

    tires

The biggest hassle I have had with my truck, GVWR 33k lb, is getting tires. The recommended Michelin 395/85R20 XZL have been been difficult to get.I guess the military pretty much buys them all up. Getting the new old stock, means getting a 10 year old tire that has been sitting in a...

Ready to make larger committment, seeking ideas

rblackwell, a member of this site has traveled much of the world in a Tiger, an Earthroamer, and a GXV on a U500 chassis. He has a website , whiteacorn.com. Before I bought my vehicle in 2011-2012, I spent a lot of time researching his thoughts on all three vehicles. He has a ton of practical...

Full Size Expedition Vehicle Recovery Gear

So I recently buried my U1400 in a creek. It weighs 10k. I buried it up to the axles(portal) and had the front fender ensnared in tree roots. I had to run over three hundred feet of line including the dynamic strap and use my 23000 lb U500 with 16.5 ton winch and doubled it with a snatch block...

Full Size Expedition Vehicle Recovery Gear

Waveslider. You did find the correct images that he sent me, on the website. Yes, he strongly preferred synthetic rope over the steel cable that came on the winch, so I changed to the synthetic he recommended. Safe-Xtract sold me all of the gear, including the 5/8 inch winch line extension. He...

Full Size Expedition Vehicle Recovery Gear

Chris Cole, of Safe-xtract sent these recommendations to me for my 23k pound vehicle with a 16.5k winch on it(I followed his recomendations): 3) Here is what I would recommend: a) You get a 1/5" diameter 20 'Kinetic Energy Recovery Rope [KERR] with a MTS of 74,000 lbs. [or even better a 2" at...

GXV Patagonia on the Kenworth K370 chassis

The only complaint on my GXV is my Cummings diesel generator doesn't have a cold start and is useless if the temperature is much below freezing, especially at high altitudes

Favorite Places to go After Overland Expo West

Our mog group did the north rim of the canyon after expo west one year, from Lake Powel to Lake Meade and that was fun. One day camping in snow, the next in shorts in the desert. We also followed the Great Divide to Canada, but that wasn't as much fun. Too much time required on major roads.

    tire story from Hell

So my 2008 Michelin 395/85 R20 XZL tires, bought unused in 2013, were starting to get sidewall cracks on my 12 1/2 ton expedition vehicle. The newest " never used" replacement tires available were made in 2010. A seven year old tire is a seven year old tire, used or not, so I wanted to get...

What type of awning for large vehicle?

As far as powered vs nonpowered, I like the nonpowered on mine. a friend had powered on his, and everytime the wind came up a little it would automatically retract. That can be good or bad.

    U500 crash, two firefighters killed

it is still made as well as the newer XZL+ in that size, all still rated for 55 mph

Can anyone compare GXV and Earthcruiser?

So GXV has lots of options on the chassis. Besides Ford, Dodge, Freightliner, there is the Fuso, U500, and the Stewart and Stevenson military1078 4x4 or 1083 6x6. Using a government surplus 1078 or 1083 will save many thousands of dollars. GXV can alter these to get your speed to 70 mph, but...

    U500 crash, two firefighters killed

Looks like that was for a tire size, that I haven't seen anyone use these days on a U500. But all this makes me wonder how safe is the common practice of buying 4-6 yr old unused old military stock(to save$1000+per tire) and trying to run on them for years. I confess I often run 62mph on the...

Want a Unimog for build ...help

I just came back from La Junta,Co, where I bought U1400 from Rob Pickering at Terry Lee Enterprises. He has several nice mogs ready to be turned into Rv's. I think there were at least three there that were 4 door. Forget about 65 mph in a mog unless you get a U500.

Where to buy a square mog? Advice?

Why don't you look at Stewart and Stevenson 1078's on Iron planet. You get a U1300 like truck with a CAT engine and Allison automatic transmission in the 1994 to 1998 years for 10 grand or less, most with less than 10k miles on them. A friend of mine sold his U500 and bought 1996 S&S...
