1st Gen Tundra Owners Weigh In (Over GVWR?)

Wow I haven't seen a bed come apart on one of these! Luckily the 1st gen AC models never got traction control to my knowledge. In my case the bed is an aluminum flat bed and super strong.

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

You are the winner! The bad pictures don't do it any favors. My Idea is that a huge cabover and lots of weight in front of the rear axle will reduce overall stress. However I want to load up with a ton of insulation, battery bank, water, gear, snow and ice sometimes, and so on. Could be 2000lbs...

1st Gen Tundra Owners Weigh In (Over GVWR?)

So I've been searching all over to see how much weight all of you 1st gen owners throw in the bed! If you could give your set up, weight, and any mods it would be appreciated! Many people love these trucks and I think this info is great for a growing following. No shaming for overloading or...

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

Lot of good info here! I'd like to overload the tundra because its the truck i have and I know it has been maintained. As I promised some pics of the Hellwig Springs: You tell me which is before and after? Handling did improve greatly but the truck clearly needs more... The camper is a...

    Tundra UTE Flatbed Build Begins

That sounds like a good plan. I only used a bunch of spacers in the rear to line the bed up with the door trim. For the fuel filler I just hammered the factory bracket into a shape that fit under the bed. The hose was not modified. Just zip tied it in place. Fills just fine. Only problem is...

Thanks its useful to hear someone who is actually speaking on specific real experience. Also that is a great looking rig!!

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

For the time being I ditched the stand up height camper and hope to build something custom on down the road. Currently I was lucky enough to stumble on an Alaskan built Cache Camper. They come in many different shapes and sizes and mine is one of the classic unique designs you rarely see...

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

@rruff airbags are great but I didn't mess with them much on my last rig. 25psi provided a great ride loaded or unloaded. I suppose you could get creative with adjusting for things like that if you had on board air connected. I ran mine with a T fitting joining the lines for better flex...

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

@smokeysevin Thanks for the info. I believe at this point I have convinced myself that I do not want to run bags without a spring upgrade in conjunction. At least for the purpose of heavy load hauling. For the time time being I am installing the Hellwig 990 spring kit. The 1000 pound hard side...

Looking for a flatbed cabover shell with cargo access

Might not be relevant because of the location but could sere as some inspiration. Cache Camper here in Alaska builds all kinds of great looking cab over shells with cool options that are utilitarian. For example being able to haul a quad then unload it and set up a nice little sleeping platform...

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

Yes most of these thoughts have crossed my mind. I have herd many good reviews of airbags and had to search to find a some examples of frame damage as a result. Am I the only one who thinks $1300 for springs on a 1/2 Ton truck is a bit high? My full size van cost half that upgraded and...

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

Now this is exactly the type of balanced in depth information I was looking for! @tacollie that was extremely helpful. Lots of factors to consider. Also funny its an Aussie article considering the truck I am referring to has got some of that flavor. @sourdoughben I actually looked at your old...

Frirstone Air Bags + 1000 Pound Camper = Broken Tundra Frame

This question is going out to everyone who has hauled a truck bed camper on a Toyota truck. Today our local leaf spring shop in Anchorage Alaska told me that Firestone Air Bags and a 1000 pound hard side camper would put me at a big risk of cracking the frame on my 2006 Tundra... The logic made...

    Tundra UTE Flatbed Build Begins

Totally understand the bumper dilemma. I plan to fab a raised hitch at some point myself. After some debate I am looking at building a canopy similar in shape to a norweld. I'm going to use wood frame and skin with insulation for winter camping. Not only for a cheap option but also to minimize...

    Tundra UTE Flatbed Build Begins

Thanks! I checked out your build thread. Sorry about your truck. The bed is significantly lighter than stock and larger (6.5'x7'). It does raise the deck to the wheel well height. Makes for a high load height with a lifted truck. However it leaves space for a storage drawer under the deck...
