    Making a ifting roof on a 110

Update and problem solving Well the lifting roof has proved itself. Been out in a variety of weather and its been light and airy with the sides open in the summer, and survived a reasonably stiff gale one night in the early spring. It's not leaked either, neither when elevated, nor when down...

    Who makes this?

Wow that's so cool - a Land Rover themed cheese grater! Brilliant idea for the well-fed overlander!

This has helped me to manage my Rover Defender envy

I did a photographic contract for a year on an island off the west coast of Scotland that is a National Nature Reserve. It is wild with basically no roads, only rough (very very rough!) tracks. They used to have Land Rovers but decided to save money and bought, so I believe, Vauxhall Brava...

Post pictures of your Land Rover.

A couple of days out in the north of Scotland with my son, and my nephew from Norway who's over for a visit and hitching about and camping. No drama, apart from a gale, too much rain, and a clunking rear A frame joint. At least we had a few nice camping spots and rather fine malt whisky!

    Chines Radiators?

May not matter to you but many of these Chinese radiators on EbayUK are plastic and metal rather than all metal. I ordered one and the guy assured me it was all metal and when it arrived it had plastic side tanks. The potential for failure with two differing materials concerned me so I sent it...

Alternator regulators - are they worth fitting?

Did some tests: It was about -1 deg. and frosty. Van had not been started/run for a few days. Aux battery at rest = 12.68v Main battery at rest = 12.61v Pulled apart heater multiplug (Eberspacher unit's main connection loom, 12 inches cable-length from heater unit) to take voltage reading: at...

Alternator regulators - are they worth fitting?

Been having some electrical problems with my Land Rover 110 which has a pair of batteries connected with an IBS Split Charge Battery Monitor system. My Eberspacher has been flashing up low-voltage cut-out warnings and shutting down, even when the battery is supposedly fully charged. Charge seems...

Wander in the Mild Mild West (of Scotland)

Our last stop was Loch Ailort, near Glenuig. A place I'd spent a lot of time as a child. My dad knew many people in the area and fished here often, and occasionally his work took him down to check up on rural Post Offices. This was great fun for me involving as it invariably did, dangerous...

Wander in the Mild Mild West (of Scotland)

We made a little detour to Loch Moidart and Castle Tioram, a fine piece of crumbling Highland history dating back to the 13th century. There was a proposal by the owners to renovate it, partly as a home and also a museum but to enable public access. However this fell foul of Scheduled Monument...

Wander in the Mild Mild West (of Scotland)

The fossil burn on the side of Loch Aline was just as I remembered it. William loved it. He bashed away valiantly at a few large rocks with little effect, my sunglasses protecting his eyes from the worst of the shrapnel. I showed him the more delicate way, picking some softer slabs and holding...

Wander in the Mild Mild West (of Scotland)

Yes, the MILD west. Of Scotland! Anyone who followed my Land Rover 110 home-made lifting roof adventure will know what I've got. Last week I took my son William (7) for a run over to the west coast, to my home district of Lochaber, to show him some of the places I used to work and play in...

Sounds good. Well if you don't manage to call in up/down I could maybe come over to Durness for a night and meet you depending on what else I'm tied up with around then.

    Making a ifting roof on a 110

Thanks sydneyman! Its been a haul, but worth it. I think if you're contemplating, just have a go. As it's mostly all done off the vehicle you can do it and see if it works and then fix it on, or scrap it!

    Making a ifting roof on a 110

Hi Alec - aye been out and enjoying it! Still 'constructing' bits of it - electrics etc but its pretty much all working and proving very practical. How are things in the far north? Are you getting much time in the ambulance?

    Making a ifting roof on a 110

Yes there's a video on the ExTec site of a pneumatic/hydraulic system pushing the roof up. Only snag is it is fitted in the centre of the rear door pushing up a front hinged roof and effectively blocks the back door. The build thread for that Toyota I posted has a section on the hydraulics and...
