    Diesel Coolant heater sizing question

Unicat told me that an oversized heater leads to more rapid soot/carbon buildup in the combustion chamber, which can cause premature malfunction (at exactly the wrong time of course), necessitating a rebuild or even replacement. Because it spends too much time at the lowest heat output; OTOH...

    New 70 series

Arc tan (.985/1.3) ~= 37 degrees Your “assumption” that ρ(h), density function of entire vehicle with respect to height off the ground, is a constant is (to be kind and diplomatic) the most ridiculous engineering assumption I’ve seen in a very long time.

    New 70 series

Your “physics” calculations fail to account for motor, drivetrain etc being much lower than half the height; frame, fuel tanks; winches; water tanks in camper, batteries all are at bottom of camper. Or lower. So, the COG is ~1.3m high, and the track is 1.97m wide. Therefore, the tip over angle...

    New 70 series

Mine is 11’8.5”, not 20’ tall. Shorter than a class C with enormous AC on top, they usually have at least 2, along with 1-200ah batteries which makes it useless off grid. In 18 years I’ve had to detour exactly twice due to height in 114k miles traveling through NA, Australia, southern África and...

    New 70 series

The H55 went away many years ago. Yes, the engine options now are: 4.5L V8 turbo diesel, the new 2.8; and I’m not sure whether the 4.2L petrol L6 has been replaced by a 4.5L V8 or not. I asked Kai Gorn if he thought the 6 speed automatic had a low enough 1st gear, he answered in the affirmative...

    New 70 series

Their V8 diesel cruiser is blueprinted, chipped, does 170kph and gets marginally better mileage than my 12 metric ton Unimog camper - 10mpg!

    New 70 series

The “New Landcruiser”. 2.8L 4cyl turbo, about 5 hp and 5 ft-lb more than V8 4.5L turbo diesel. In Hilux does ~29mpg, new owner hopes for 23-24. Comes only with 6 speed automatic.

Look, I just promised to take a picture. But typically, when tare and gross weights are posted on a sticker, the difference is ~1100 kg = 2425 lb.

I said I’d take a picture of 70 series rear springs. 70mm (~2.75”) wide as always. Main leaves look the usual 7mm thick. This is a wagon so it has 2 x 12mm sub leaves; pickups seem to have 3. And only 5 main leaves vs 6 in pickups. Didn’t measure length, no tape measure, but I suspect the spring...

    Rolls 8D LiFePO4

Anyone had personal experience with the above? Currently thinking of putting 3 of the above (225 lb, 900ah, 720ah usable) to replace 4 Lifeline AGM 4D (500 lb, 840ah, 420ah usable). Height and length almost identical, width of 3x 8D < 4 x 4D. Prices I’ve seen aren’t outrageous. Eventually.

    Best Expedition Rig base?

Yes you legally need a CDL outside North American. ** MB is the most ubiquitous truck make in the most countries. But having a late model (<25yo) is incompatible with registration in certain states, unless certain magical things (which are possible but unprintable) are done. And then to make it...

    1) yes on LC 5 bolt wheels 2) re US “HD” pickups, they can TOW more. Mainly due to 6-7L engines. Regarding what you can actually put in the bed, I will try to get a picture of the rear leaf springs tomorrow (FF axle of course).

Just paid a visit to our neighbors in this beautiful quiet campground on the Kunene River on the border with Angola. They’re from Limpopo area of SA. Nice newish 77 series 4 door with V8 diesel and elaborate popup/expandable offroad capable trailer. I’ll try to sneak a picture later.

So this is our guide for the day and grandson in front of the most ultra basic cheapest LC (pickup version) possible, in northern Namibia near Epupa Falls. It’s recent, has 5-bolt wheels. V6 rather than inline 6 gasoline engine. Rear diff lock only. The usual very HD rear leaves and coil sprung...
