Chaining Up tips requested

FYI, I've never seen a road in CA that was R3 and not closed by the Highway Patrol. Maybe they allow residents and/or essential personnel through, but in general you'll never be asked to do more than display your chains at a checkpoint if you have a 4WD and decent tires. Now SHOULD you use chains? I do whenever it's hard, icy snow and slow going.

Big bear just had an R3 last week after the "storm" The DOT description was different than the one above. It said chains on vehicles with 4wd only. They had an R2 for the next day or two afterwards... Its not so much the snow, but the ice on those switchback roads that suck.

As for tips, my pops always did the 4x4 under the tire trick and I do the same. Easier to tension and less time on the cold and wet road.
