Interesting, Why are these places abandoned?

Its all rather simple... do you see any Native American history in US? (which does have its roots to who-knows-how-many centuries ago, dont it?)

Same here... basically, thats an area that just too remote for anyone to access it on daily basis, and all local population slowly passed away or left, since there is no infrastructure...

Very similar to mining Ghost Towns that you find throughout Oregon/Colorado/Utah, etc.

I figured it had to do with the forced movement of the rural people to the factories, for the common good of course. Same forces at work, explains the abandonment of the orthodox religious buildings.
