My off road trailer build!

So I started building my off road trailer a few weeks ago. A buddy loaned me his garage space and his welding abilities and we started building. I wanted something simple, not too big and not too heavy. After all, I will be pulling it with my Jeep JK.

So I went with a 3'x6' box with 2' high sides. I wanted to run the same 285/75/16 tires as I have on my JK. We built the frame out of 2"x2" square tubing. The sides of the box are 16 gauge steel and the frame of the box is 1" angle iron he had laying around. We made the axle as I had to get the hubs to fit my 5 on 5 pattern.

I havn't decided what to do for a top yet. I finished up with POR15 on the frame. I think I am going to use a DIY bed liner for inside the box and I may go with Rustoleum Hammered for the outside. I would go with POR15 all the way around, but I DO NOT want the gloss look!

So here are some pictures from along the way!

Looks perfect. You might consider adding a rear trailer hitch receiver. Works great for hard point to mount bike rack, fuel, spare tire, etc.

I would add a couple of angled pieces to the tongue, it looks like 2x2 and that is not strong enough to survive normally, other than that, it looks great. Nice work.

It looks to be 120 wall. And that is not really strong enought for a tongue that long without trianglelating the frame.

Thanks all. I am thinking about using Rustoleum "Hammered" in silver with black fenders. I actually thought of the rear receiver hitch after I left the shop. I have a hitch carrier that I use with the Jeep that would work perfect behind the trailer also for some extra stuff. The 2x2 is 11 guage. The tongue is feet long. I added the platform up front of the box for extra stuff. It is made out of the same angle iron as the trailer box frame. It is welded to the tongue and the box as well.

Good choice for colors.
I would triangulate the tongue also.
from the box to 12" from the coupler.
One good bounce when the trailer is loaded and it will look like a pretzel.

I would go under the box 12 to 15 inches. That looks awfully thin for a tongue, most use 2.5 inch and 240 wall thickness, and still triangulate. Other than that it is a very clean looking trailer and I like the color idea to.

I just noticed the clearance on the wheels to the fenders, may be an optical illusion, but they look very close. Traveling up on a hit or rock caught between may damage them. Then there could be plenty of room, hard to tell with photos.

In the picture, the bend in the outer lip of the fender makes it look closer than it is. The outer lip will not come in contact with the sidewall.

I would use the same, it will look better and the added strength will do away with any worry about it bending.
