New to me M101 CDN build

Well, I have been looking for one for a while and I found myself now owning one in great condition. I set about it pretty quickly and have stripped it down and flipped it, so I can re-treat the underside. Next I will be servicing the hubs, butI want to run larger wheels/tires on it. Q - If I change the hub to a 5x5 to fit the same wheels as my JK, will I have offset issues? Sorry for sounding like a real nube, it's because I am.

I have been given a bit of great advice, that Standen's of Calgary are a great point of contact for replacing anything to do with this.

I'll start taking photos and post here, with any info and issue resolution I occur.pAQ2F6V4SE6VjPdrhRY77A.jpg

Sorry, I’ve neglected to keep you guys updated. I’m slowly making progress, the running gear is done, I swapped out the hubs for ones with electric brakes from etrailer.com and the lid is almost finished. The reframe is complete I just need to attach the alluminium sheet to it. I’m currently fabricating the fenders, extending them out and running 1” tube down the side. Here’s some photos...

I think I need a bigger truck!
Wow, that looks great man. I sure had a lot of fun building mine, and sure do still miss it. Even more than I miss the Jeep! I though about keeping it, but sold it to build a camper (custom and home built of course). Yours is in much better shape than mine was when I bought it, great starting point!

Looking forward to seeing this as it progresses.

Update: Sorry for the delay in updating this thread... I have put some photos below of my progress, it's almost useable! I'm trying to get it ready for this weekend (05 Jun 20) for it's maiden voyage.

We removed the old fender and welded a 1" round tube up to run along the side running into the pull handles at the front.

IMG_1062.jpeg

I was kindly given another set of fenders from a friend (thanks Elliott), so we were able to cut and re-weld both sets to widen the fenders. This enabled me to keep the look of the old fenders.
IMG_1056.jpeg

We re-purposed some old JK tailgate hinges from mine and a buddy JK and used three to make the lid hinge. We had to cut them down and bend them to take shape of the lid. They turned out great I feel.

We also set about working out how to make the RRT raise and lower, so I don't have a constantly high tent and one I can raise to utilise the annex.
IMG_1126.jpeg

The tasing mechanism led to lots of head scratching moments, but I feel we have accomplished it. I wanted to design some kind of bump stop so it doesn't come down too far, when it did, I was unable to raise it again. I was determined to create something that was able to be raised and lowered with one person.

IMG_1132.jpeg

Happy with how it was going, we removed the rack (made of 1.5" GalvAllum and welded some 1" sqr tube in to support the RRT and painted it black.
IMG_1149.jpeg

You can see some small eyelets we attached to the front of the lid and rear for the raising frame. This was so we could secure the tent system elevated and have piece of mind it wasn't coming back down when I was asleep sup there.

IMG_1150.jpeg

Next is to finish tidying up the fenders, front and rear of lid, then get it painted. There is lots I want to do such as attach 2x 5lb propane tank brackets to the side, some kind of tongue storage ro battery system. Utilise the front part of the raised rack to carry boxes in transit. I also need to finish the levelling jacks to stabilise it all.

I'll keep ya posted, I promise haha

Thanks, yeah it's been a great learning experience and challenging. I have enjoyed it so far, I can't wait to use it now.

Awesome sir! Honestly half the fun of owning something like this and doing something like this is the actual work of building it. I got to see my old trailer last weekend. It turns out the folks I sold it to took it on an epic adventure around the US and Baja Mexico and then returned here and sold it. Well I was cleaning out the garage and came across the lower room for it in a bag... new and never opened. I managed to track down the new owners and dropped it off. Nice one with the waterproof floor and all...

Was in rough shape. Rode hard and put away wet. heh But nice folks, and they live maybe 6 blocks from here.

Good work!

Ok, so the first use of the new to me trailer went well. I found it a little bouncy so I may be changing the shocks out. I have started with the final touches and that's to paint the tub to match the Jeep. I now also need to work out a solution to the RhinoRack Batwing Awning I have, I want to leave it attached to the trailer whilst not interfering when loading it.

Well, a little more has been done now. I’ve fit larger wheels and tires, I’ve painted it to match the Jeep and just used Herculiner to coat the tub. It’s a roll on application so much cleaner than spraying. We fabricated a mount for the Rhinorack Batwing 270 awning. Made it removable to give more flexibility.
