Hello, I have been lurking on expo for some time I recently had a 2001 Silverado 1500HD I loved that truck! but that 6.0 gas killed the pocketbook ! along with the silverado getting some miles on it 180K and some major issues, Rear main had big leak, Engine used Oil, Driveshaft was bent/carrier worn, Hard Pull when stepping on the brakes. Window regulators starting to slow down. I know this was all stuff I could have fixed easy but when you get to the meat and potatos of it all I still have a truck with 180+ and I knew the motor would need to be refreshed to fix the oil consumption issue. So after much thought I decided to look for a new truck I looked hard and heavy at the big 3 as I am a big fan of chevy trucks along with Dodge diesels, During my search anything American was big bucks unless it was over 150k and older than 12 years which I didn't want to get another old turd. Out on a whim I looked at a Toyota Tundra never thought in a million years id buy something that didn't say GM,FORD,DODGE.
So yesterday I went out in search of a new truck I looked at a few Tundras drove 3 hours to look
1st One was a 2005 DC SR5 TRD but it was pretty rusty needed exhaust, tires, battery, and most important T-belt this was a truck this dealer bought at auction. and transfer case was leaking. and brakes were shaking pretty bad during test drive.
2nd One was a 2004 Extended Cab but was pending sale once I arrived the sales guy let me look and test drive just in case it fell threw (wouldn't know until monday if buyer was actually going to purchase) It was a clean truck few dings here and there but it had low miles 88k tires were junk! exhaust had a large hole in the muffler and battery was shot, brakes looked new and it had a spray in bedliner that was pealing pretty bad.
after looking at the first two trucks I decided to call the first dealer and make a offer on there truck the salesman said they wouldn't budge off of there price even that it needed all the work. and they wanted to give me very little on trade (I expected to get very little but not robbed)
feeling pretty discouraged about how my day went so far I sat and ate some lunch and said what the heck I looked online for the local Toyota dealer and decided to visit on my way out of town to make the 3 hour trip back home, sure enough they had a 2006 SR5 TRD on the lot, they were asking more than I wanted to spend but I said what the heck I drove this far I might as well take a look at it. after walking around the lot aimlessly with the sales lady that was helping me trying to find this truck she got on phone and called her boss and asked where the heck it was. Short time later he pulled up and I knew this was the truck !!!
The dealer just put 4 brand new Firestone destination AT tires on and it was just coming out of the shop.
after doing some peaking around the truck it also has brand new spray in bed liner, fresh rust proofing on the frame and a brand new battery just installed, along with I looked over all the service records on file intake flush at 60k trans flush at 75k brakes done at 90k timing belt done at 92k I took the truck for a spin and the sales lady must have known I was interested so when we got back she said what will it take to sell this today. I laid out my numbers of what I needed for my truck and what I would pay for theirs shortly they said we had a deal! by the time it was all said and done I was exhausted from the search but I think when it was all said and done it was well worth it.
I am ready to start browsing the Toyota section and see what others have done to make their Tundras more trail worthy and start the process of modifications to my truck and making it personal.
I am hoping for many years of dependable service out of this rig and hope it is more stout than my Silverado I just traded off.
Thanks for reading my rant and I am excited to see everyones builds here. Low50s
