Or leave it all behind and just travel with the dutch oven. We also have a nice long handles skillet.

Here is our set-up, high up in the French Alps. lots of wood and 1 dutch oven. boiled some water over on the side in some mess tins :wings: we even had some deer come to inspect us that evening, fantastic night.

The mention of ebay wasnt enough? I need to link you directly? And for not doing so i get the thumbs down and a sarcastic attitude?

This search took me less than 30 seconds. Your welcome.

This guy is in W VA and you specifically said TX.

You can find better quality tripod and spits on ebay. Theres a guy in Texas making them that are beefy, very reasonable as well.

So who's the guy in TX that's making better quality stuff than what you've seen posted? I was simply assuming that you were talking from experience and asked for a link to something that you KNOW to be of better quality.

The TX guy does not have an active auction, i linked an alternative after you obviously didnt care for my response.

If you feel the need to continue nagging feel free to take it to PM, no need for the rest of the forum to suffer through it.

Back to the topic!

I have used this firepan on river and jeep expeditions continously since 1987 and it is still as good as the day I bought it. Not cheap, but it is the real deal and meets USFS regulations.

We used one of those on our river trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River a couple of years back. It worked great!

I have also used replacement grates, balanced on rocks/logs, to cook over.

This is the grate from my volcano.

Does a hot dog on a stick count?

Here is a simple grill on a fire ring...

That setup looks HEAVY! How much do you think that all of it weighs together? Save the weight, its the perfect setup for cooking just about anything.

The firepit weighs around 100-120 lbs, it stays in the back yard where you see it; it's only moved when we need to mow the back yard.

The tripod and grill are easy to transport; the grill comes apart so it lays flat, the tripod, no more than three 1/2" bars about 48" long, no biggie.

Thanks,

Thanks guys-great ideas. I have a good friend who's a pretty good fabricator (Air Force trained machinist/welder) so I think I might trade some beers for time in his shop now that I have some ideas.

Makin' Beer.
I've got a book called The Backyard Blacksmith by some lady named Simms or something like that, but any way she gives directions to make your own tripod and kitchen accessory rack. I'd kind of like to try that but I'm not equipped with a forge or anvil or anything.
