Is by chance the trail thats goes from the 87 to bartlett?

Yes! It's the log corral trail. the lake is too full! And we talked to the forest sevice and it's ok that we crossed through the lake. However we found out that the verde river crossing that is below the dam and part of that trail is actually currently "closed". Woops. So anyway if you run log corral at least for now you can't make a loop and have to come back out the way you went in from the 87. The intersection at the rejoin to Bartlett lake rd also has a locked gate right now but there's nothing telling you about it from the 87 side. Again we should have called the FS BEFORE our trip instead of after, lesson learned.
