What years? Suburban and Tahoe

While I've owned and enjoyed numerous 88-98 GM Vehicles, I would opt for a 2003+ Suburban or Yukon XL. The 5.3 & 6.0 are great engines. Like others have said, if your going to be using the 3rd row extensively, the Suburban/Yukon XL is the way to go. 2007+ GM vehicles are a little lacking in the fit and finish but are still great for running around town. I own a 2004 truck and a 2007 tahoe and i would recommend them both :coffee:

Leaning hard toward the Suburban and XL. Now, where do I find the clean one owner rigs?! I've looked on cars.com, autotrader.com, local dealerships (North and East TX) and ye ol craigslist. Most are very new and really pricey and others are beat to death and dirty. I'll keep hunting.

Since you asked, I have an extremely nice white '87 (TBI) 2500 4x4 w/ 68k miles from Ca!! Has a very modest new 2" lift with new Toyo A/T-II's on H-2 wheels. Original paint, and even the dash has ZERO cracks, interior like new to boot!! Loaded truck w/ cruise, tilt, PW, PL, third row seat, etc, etc.
PM if interested, and I will get some pics as well.

I found mine on Craigslist from a dealer.

One thing I like about the 3/4T 8.1L is it has:

Biggest trans in a Suburban (4L85 vs 6.0/4L80 and 5.3/4L60)
Mileage hit with the BBC over the 6.0 is negligible
Full float 14B rear (SF 14 bolt in 6.0)
40 gallon tank
It moves with little throttle input

If you get an early 8.1L, be aware of the cam position sensor which I read affects only 01s, which I have. I need to replace the cam gear to utilize the updated 02 and newer sensor which is the only one available. Symptoms are a no start/hard start and a CEL. I have found that if I immediately try to start the engine from the off position, it just cranks and backfires. If I put it to run for a few seconds so it can read off the crank sensor, it starts just fine.

With 33" tires and 20s, I average 11.5mpg... Now that's 11.5 in town, 11.5 driving to work, 11.5 on a 1000 mile trip running 80mph. It doesn't get worse, it doesn't get better.

Why would you get a rig this big and not have 4x4? It makes no sense to me. The only + would be at best 1 mpg difference. But if your buying a suburban, mpg's are probably not top on your list. jmo.
