Might want to check the resistance in your lead that ties the two batteries together (across the top of the shroud), these trucks read charging/output voltage at the drivers side battery but the output from the alternator feeds into the passenger side one, so if the truck sees low output voltage...

The pickup Aisins do work, I pulled mine (when I had IFS) from a local wrecking yard for $40. Easy to do with basic tools, don't even have to take the wheels off. Never noticed any mileage difference though.
