99 Jeep XJ Intro and expedition "build" attempt! Plus some restoration.

Red type bomb icon warning Your tire carrier has a design flaw.......a bad one, the retention cable will spin on the bumper causing the tire carrier to overun the limit driving the upper mount on the quarter panel inward even with the bracing. This will not only cause a huge dent but render...

What to do, what to do, restore the XJ or upgrade to a WJ or WJ

As most of you can see from my post on "Shipfitter syndrome" I can be very stupid when it comes to "Fixing Up" a vehicle I have rather than holding a funeral and starting over. What I have now is an 89 XJ PAID FOR with a good drive train and a straight rust free body, it does need things like...

RIP Ugly Orange That poor old Chevy has long ago gone to truck heaven. I did however sell the engine for $2000 before the funeral.

    shipfitter syndrome

Shipfitter syndrome is what it is called when you spend a stupid amount of money polishing a turd. I had that happen with a 71 pickup that was more rust than metal. What happened was I needed to change the oil, a very simple job, right. That was before "Shipfitters" struck. I said to my...

    Salvaging a drowned jeep

:snorkel: First off I will admit that I can have frequent attacks of stupidity, that being said. I live in the Houston area where we have had a wee bit of rain, like over a foot in one day and over 20 inches in the last month. There have been over 1000 vehicles drowned as in submerged over the...

    The world's largest army...

I have read with interest the naysayers reasons that the Militia mentioned in the 2nd amendment ( all the armed citizens of the U.S.) would ineffective and doomed to failure. I have one question for them. Have they ever disturbed a hive of bees or kicked over a nest of fire ants? Will they...

    Camping with Firearm-Post Bear Mauling

My wife is a wildlife photographer and we lived in an area where bears also lived, our bear rules were simple. She used the largest lens in the bag. I would have a bear tag, the season would be open, and I would have a "STOPPING" rifle (.450 marlin). The bear could be a bear all day long, I...

    Help with my squatting XJ

My XJ has a budget 3" lift, shackle and front coil. It has been very satisfactory for 5 years but alas no longer, it now has a semi permanent 300# load about 10" behind the rear bumper (mobility scooter and lift) so it squats about 5" when loaded. Any suggestions of shocks and springs will...

Build your own aluminum roofrack with only a saw, drill, and hex wrench

First a disclaimer: I am not smoking crack or under the influence of any recreational chemicals. I have been studying roofrack construction including the 49 page thread on homemade roofracks not a single person had mentioned the VERY SECRET WEBSITE:Wow1: i have discovered for materials...

    Xterra vs sand

My wee XJ is getting tired after 25 years and 250000 miles and will soon need a lot of attention/$$$$$ thrown at it, so I am thinking of going over to/leaving the dark side with an xterra. My offroad issue is sand, lots of it, Texas beach sand, I know from this forum that Cooper tires love...

    aftermarket shifters for XJ

After having to relocate my seat back 2" it is very long reach to the transmission and transfer case shifters. My hoped for fix is a custom center console that will move the shifters to a more pleasing location. My question is has anyone used an aftermarket shifter for this, if so which one? Bob

Synthetic winch line vs. metal winch line??

When I get a winch for my XJ it will be synthetic because of environmental issues, 99% of my off road activity is on the beach what salt spray and salt air can do to galvanized cable is not nice at all. Bob
