right on. looks like a nice area by google. pretty big valley in the county but the county is huge and looks to take up several mountain ranges.

Lot's of negative talk recently about guns on the trail.

So.....

If the bad guys show up at your campsite at 2am while you are sound asleep in your tent with your family.....including your Children, to do you harm.....are you going to run out of your tent and hit them over the head with your Flashlight to save your wife and children?

What if the Bad Guys have guns>?!!!

there is always negative talk when it comes to guns. Firearms rights are one of the big things that the left wish to take from us, for some reason. although it was not always that way.

they usually do. the idea is to be a little better at knowing when and how to use it

oh yeah!!!

It's an easy choice.

If a person actually has to think about this, they are a moron

Have not posted in this since earlier, but right on!
Most thieves that are going to target/rob campers in the wilderness are going to be armed.
I know I would if I was a thief and looking to rape/pillage a campers site.

Sometimes you have to think like a criminal to expect what they are going to do.
From now on my AR15 is going with me everytime I camp.
It is better to have a tool and not need it than to not have a tool when you do need it.

I do need to look into a smaller gun though, maybe that Taurus Judge.
I use to have a Taurus 9 mm back in the early 90s I liked.

PS, this is why many conceal carry too.

Am I the only one who thinks that this topic does not have much to do with overlanding and traveling?

I must say I am a bit disturbed right now. I am totally surprised by the number of members here that feel a need to bring a gun where camping.

Raises hand, but to be fair I'm not sure where some people are camping. All I will say judging by a few of the responses is, DAMN, count me out! These places must be pretty shady to feel the need for a few of the weapons displayed, and who knew that meth heads and recidivist criminals liked to camp. Crazy!!

I can see why I have a slightly different take, my idea of camping is alone in the wilderness, a half days hike into the backcountry where the only weapon you'll really need is a bottle of deet.

Bad things happen almost anywhere, maybe not as often as good things when it comes to being outdoors camping and exploring, but it happens often enough that I would rather be prepared and never use it than needing just that one time and not having it. I consider it a piece of equipment just like the winch that I seldom need.

Honestly, in all my years of camping I've never encountered a "bad guy" in the back country. In fact I would go as far as to say that with the exception of some drunken shenanigans I've never met anyone that disagreed with me internally. The majority of people on this planet are good people, and I would guess that those who do display questionable taste or morality, rarely venture into the wilderness in search of finding someone to prey on. The likelihood that I am going to need a weapon to defend myself from another person in the woods, I assume, is so miniscule that it hardly justifies a desire or urge let alone a need to arm myself. Bringing a flyswatter makes more sense for me as the danger from insects would probably be far greater than that of human predator in the woods.

Others may have different experiences and may feel a lot differently though and I acknowledge that, but in my mind carrying while camping doesn't makes a lot of sense.

Fear is a powerful thing.

Sure is, and it has kept me alive up until now. Channeled properly, it can save your a**.

I have run into bad hombres in the middle of nowhere... meth freaks and nutjobs. More than once.

In my experience, the ones who you run into far from where they should be are usually pretty rough around the edges i.e. just as "savvy" as you are but out there for quite different reasons. Outlaws like Manson hid out in the desert for a reason... and he was/is quite insane. This isn't a new concept.

I have a buddy who is a Riverside County Sherrif. They have a saying - If all the bodies buried out in the desert stood up at once it would look like a forest. I can recount several stories over the last 10 years of innocent campers murdered in cold blood for no apparent reason.

I sleep better at night with steel.

Like I said different experiences. I would also guess that location plays a part in this as well. For instance, camping close to the US/Mexico boarder may prove to be a riskier location then other rural areas and may very well justify a health does of precaution.

As a rebuttal to the posted ******** video, this is what would likely happen to me. LOL

No question that location has a lot to do with the number of "bad guys." This is why I stay far away from Southern California. I have zero interest in recreating in places that are anywhere close to that seething mass of insanity, er, humanity.

I wouldn't think that camping is the most dangerous place someone can be, I guess had a different image in my mind.

Not to bring things like Statistics into it, but I am an enginerd by training.

Looking at this chart http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2008/02/28/GR2008022800363.html

there is a violent crime rate of 1.65 per 100,000 in national parks in 2006. (It's the data I can find, so I'll use it). Most of those were robberys or larceny, So let's remove larceny cause we can assume that noone got hurt in those robberies. If someone did, they'd be counted under other statistics, such as rape or murder.

So, if we remove larceny we are at .374 crimes(the really nasty ones) for every 100,000 visitors in 2006. That is a pretty low rate.

According to the FBI, in 2005 the homicide(murder rate) in the entire US was 5.6 per 100,00. In national parks it was 0.004 per 100,000.

I know the data is imperfect, like it does not include state parks or BLM land. The data also dosen't include animal attacks.

I won't tell you if I carry or not. I will tell you I spent some time working @ Remington in their barrel shop in Ilion, NY; so don't classify me as anti-gun. I just wanted to get some facts out there. So much emotion, so little facts.....
